Why was she doing this? This wasn't something she did. It just wasn't. She didn't get involved unless it was to Alistair's benefit. This? This would benefit no one. Knowing her luck, the moment she told everything would explode. Explode into some fiery hell that not even Aveira could stop. And then what would she do? She would have failed again. She really didn't want more blood on her hands. She really really didn't. So why was she here? She told herself that she didn't care.
The boy didn't even matter. He wouldn't play an important roll in what was to come. She hadn't even recognized him, not at first. She had been wandering the many paths of the future, curious to see if any had become more likely than the first. Just as with every other time, they had all laid out before her. All the ones she had already walked, and the thousand more that had opened since she last tried. It was like looking for one particular needle in an endless pile of them. Each was as likely as the last to be the one she was looking for.
And then she saw him. She pricked herself on the needle, stepping into a time she hadn't meant to. He had been so broken, so lost. Some sadistic person's plaything. They couldn't dominate his spirit, so they had taken his body. His eyes were gouged out so he could not see, his ears clipped so close to his skull that they were useless. His claws were missing, his muscles having eaten themselves away a very long time ago. He had stank of death and decay, and yet he kept taking breath.
Though she doubted he even realized she was there, she had stayed with him. She had knelt beside him, carefully cutting off the nerves that were causing him pain. She swore to herself that she would never change a past or interact with a future, but... She had taken his pain away, and held him close as he finally took his last breaths. She had freed him from that prison.
And here she was making sure he never got into it.
She had changed her clothes before entering Carter's present, of course. And she had covered his future body with the clothes she once wore. It was all she could to for him. Burying him was just daring hell to break loose.
And so she wore clothes of that time. A dark hat much like a fedora adorned her silver hair, at a jaunty angle so the feather in it's band caught the wind. Upon her small body was a black lace-y dress, slightly frilled at the bottom before becoming a corset at the waist. It was plain and unassuming. Her feet were shielded by simple black ballet flats, and she stepped carefully so no stickers would harm her.
No doubt she stuck out, walking calmly and evenly through the Ranch's field. Odd enough to catch the cat's attention? She did not know. But hopefully he would listen to her, once she found him. Hopefully she could stop the future she saw.
It would be interesting, too. She had never met the boy, except in that future. Would he somehow recognize her? Did time flow like that? They were questions she had always wondered, but never dared to try.

►You have to let it in
You don't bite your tongue off
A short and well-built boy laid nesting in a pile of loose hay. He was curled in a corner of the old barn, the one that needed a paint job badly. Orange hair flopped messily around amber eyes, and two cat ears twitched on the top of his head. Yes, cat ears, his human ears had been cut off, and then these genetically impaled. If you are wondering, why yes, it was very painful. Though for once Carter Walker was at peace, and maybe it was because of the three tigers around him. Great, beautiful, orange and black stripped tigers were lazily sprawled at his feet. Carter could understand cats, their meows and grunts translated like English in his head, and cats always traveled to see him. They would rub up on him, purr nosily, and bother the hell out of him sometimes. It was how he had become the tiger and lion tamer at Circo Phantasia. He made them dance and jump through hoops of fire, with his own tongue, he needed no whip. The cats simply obeyed him. One tiger rubbed up against his knee, and Carter with half-closed eyes rubbed the side of the beast.
It was peaceful out here, where there wasn’t anyone to pick fights with, or anyone to cause trouble. Carter was famous for causing trouble. He suffered PTSD, and it had caused his personas to be mixed up a bit. Sometimes he couldn’t control the beast inside of him; he would become angry, have awful flash-backs and literally tear anything around him into shreds. He took his hate out in anyone who had irked him. He had a very childish persona, becoming like a five year old, excited about everything, and sometimes he just had his normal side, one of which wasn’t seen very often. He glanced up from the soft hay when he heard the door slide open. ”Hello, who is it?”

There they were, laid out in front of her. They taunted her, the ripplings only she could see. She so desperately wanted to step through, wanted to know the words that would warn and protect the boy, but it was far too late for that. This moment in time would never happen again, at least not in Carter's present. He had detected her. He was certainly already stretching his senses, trying to identify her. If she stepped through now, what harm would it cause? No. She had dedicated herself to this path. Even if it opened the very maw of hell, she had to go through with it.
But she did not step through the door, not yet. Though her very spirit quivered with what was to come, she disciplined herself into stillness. "Carter Walker." Her voice was almost like air. It was there but it was not. It was heard and yet could not be. How long had it been since she spoke to another soul? How long had it been since she took the initiative? What was it about this boy, this sad half-animal freak, that drove her to break her most basic laws? He meant nothing to her. He would play no part in the futures she worried herself with. He was only a troublemaker. He was only a bad seed with a bad past.
He was so much like...him.
"Before I introduce myself, I must ask you something. I must ask you that you ignore everything your senses tell you. Because of my powers, your animal half and your friends will react one of two ways. Either your senses will tell you I do not exist, or that I /must not/ exist. I promise you, neither are the case." And what of PJ? She had seen so many futures. Friends, lovers, bitter rivals, what was the invisible man to the beast at this present time? It was a bet she had to take. "I am just as real as your friend PJ, and I am here to help you. My name is Zero."
And she stepped through the door. Her hazel eyes dilated as the lighting changed, the boy she was searching for blurry for a moment. One of his friends, an old female, lifted her great head and looked upon Zero. Her tail twitched in agitation, claws digging into the warm hay before her, but she did not leap. She showed no signs of aggression. Why would she? She had the boy with her, and this thing had not shown any signs of taking him away. She laid her head down once more, golden eyes open and locked onto the figure in black. She did not relax again, but this was the best Zero had hoped for. She didn't move again, knowing all too well that the tiger's acceptance was not for long, and there was no promise the other two would be as well behaved.
Or the boy for that matter.
"Please, I must speak with you. Will you protect me from your friends?"

►You have to let it in
You don't bite your tongue off
Carter directed his senses outwards. His ears perked straight up, trying to pick up sound waves. His eyes dilated and grew over and over as he scanned the barn, yet he could see no one. A low rumbling growl echoed in his throat. It was a semi-threatening growl, one that he couldn't control. It was a defense reaction, more genetic impalement probably. A voice seemed to whisk by her, thin as air. The one thing that shocked Carter was the fact she knew his name without even knowing what he looked like. He ran a clawed hand through his orange hair, the hair flattened by the repeated movement. The sound made his rumbling in his throat increase. The tigers lifted their heads and blinked sleepily.
Carter jolted upwards, up into a standing position. The voice almost seemed to bang around his head, yet he was hearing it. He shook his head with agitation, snarling a bit in the process. Sometimes he really wished he had an off-switch. "Before I introduce myself, I must ask you something. I must ask you that you ignore everything your senses tell you. Because of my powers, your animal half and your friends will react one of two ways. Either your senses will tell you I do not exist, or that I /must not/ exist. I promise you, neither are the case." Carter struggled to make sense of the words the voice spoke of, it sounded female. Was she asking him to shut his senses down, was that even possible? The thought made him feel threatened, vulnerable. Yet somehow he felt himself relaxing a bit, the hairs on the back of his neck folding down again. He could feel the cage inside of him rattle angrily, the beast wanting to break out, angry it wasn't getting attention.
Finally, the figure made itself clear. It was a girl, her hair almost white. She sent shivers down Carter’s spine. He leaned down and nervously stroked the female tiger’s fur. ”Who are you?” Carter’s head moved slowly to the side. It was such a blatant comment, yet it’s all he wanted to know. ”We’re talking now.” He didn't mean to sound rude, but it happened a lot, out of distrust and suspicion. He shrugged, confused. ”Sure, I don’t know why you would need to be protected." Carter murmured softly.

As Carter got upset, so did the tigers. They growled as he did, one of the more active one even standing with him. And yet none attacked. The female though, she didn't make a move. She didn't even growl. She just watched Zero with the complete focus normally only Carter received. She did not understand what she was seeing, hearing. Her ears were perked forward, twitching at every sound Zero made. Her nose was once more lifted into the air, searching for any kind of scent. But Zero had none. She had no scent, she didn't make much noise, to the tiger's senses she was like a ghost.
Maybe she was. She had always had a sneaking thought that, whenever she passed through a ripple, she left a part of herself behind. Most animals treated her as if she simply did not exist, or if she was a ghost.
It made her fear Carter. That and that alone made her fear him. It was not enough to keep her away though.
"My name is Zero. My true name was lost to time a very long time ago. I joined the Circo when I was very young. I have the gift to open the veil between time and space, and to pass through it. That is why your senses cannot detect me, or tell you I am not from this realm." She was though, and if any of the cats pounced, she would bleed. She could die. What would that do to time? She had walked through so many paths, trying her best to not even leave a footprint. Would anything happen to them?
"I work for your Ringmaster, for Alistair. I walk the paths of futures and pasts to help him find Oddities in need. I do not know if you know them, but a few you pass in school or on the streets were saved by my gift. I gave the Circo when and where to scoop them into it's embrace, like Aveira Sterling." Not that the woman knew it, and Zero would never tell. Aveira had a thing about owing people. Alistair had her complete loyalty because of a debt she felt needed paid, as did Yuzki. It was those debts that had saved her fragile existence.
"I am here to warn you of a future I walked. One that lead to your death in the most horrid of ways. Normally I bring such information to Alistair or Aveira, but I believe that only you can stop it from happening, should everything align as I saw."
What would happen if he didn't listen to her? And what would happen if she did tell? Time was such a strange thing. Even being as intimately linked with it as she was, Zero couldn't even begin to understand it's power. It was like a vortex, destroying itself even as it continued to grow.
Creation and destruction in their most basic form. It humbled her to walk within it, no matter the pain it caused her.

►You have to let it in
You don't bite your tongue off
Carter swallowed nervously and glanced about. "My name is Zero. My true name was lost to time a very long time ago. I joined the Circo when I was very young. I have the gift to open the veil between time and space, and to pass through it. That is why your senses cannot detect me, or tell you I am not from this realm." Carter was wondering how long that could have been, how long had she been here? Carter had never heard of Zero before, but her gifted powers did little to faze him. He had learned very quickly that everyone here was way beyond normal. He knew there were others that had faced pain like him. "I work for your Ringmaster, for Alistair. I walk the paths of futures and pasts to help him find Oddities in need. I do not know if you know them, but a few you pass in school or on the streets were saved by my gift. I gave the Circo when and where to scoop them into its embrace, like Aveira Sterling." There were others like Aveira and Alistair, those two she spoke of. They had been tortured just like Carter. A splitting headache erupted through his head.
Carter was no longer in the barn he was in a room with bright lights, fake lights. The table was so cold and metallic, the straps cutting so deep into his skin they opened the same scars over and over again, the blood unnoticed by the scientists over head. In a second flash, the room changed and he was standing back into the barn, facing Zero. He shook his head vigorously, he hoped she hadn’t noticed. Well of coarse she would notice. ”Yes, yes I understand.” He murmured in a distant voice. "I am here to warn you of a future I walked. One that lead to your death in the most horrid of ways. Normally I bring such information to Alistair or Aveira, but I believe that only you can stop it from happening, should everything align as I saw. Carter blinked letting the words seep in. She couldn’t be for real? Could she really know his future? Apparently she could. ”What do you mean? How do I stop it? Who sent you, what kind of sick joke is this?” He felt the lava rise inside of him, the blood starting to boil, he had to keep his cool, he had to stay calm. Born into poverty, raised in torture, death in horrid ways, a wave of deep sadness filled Carter. He should never have been born.

Zero was silent as she watched him. In her /sight/ she saw him ripple and became very still. She had seen this before, seen it in those who had pasts too dark for her to walk. It left scars in their mind, ripples that would never really close. And, sometimes, they themselves were able to step like she did. They could experience their pasts. Unable to change it, for they were not free within time like her, but live as their pain burned through them once more.
She could not see through the ripple inside him, but she was certain she knew what he saw. She had walked his life for this moment, so she would understand him when she finaly spoke face to face. "My power, it is like what you just experienced. In your mind, you were taken back. I assume it was to your transformation, to when you became like you are now. I saw you ripple as your mind stepped back. My power is like that. I can step back, but I am able to move around and interact if I desire. I must be very careful. Any little thing, a footprint, could change the present." Like, but not exact. The only way she would get his trust was if she was completely truthful with him.
She slowly took a few steps forward, stopping only when the female growled. "In the future I walked, Circo will fall. For a reason I do not know, you ran back and were captured. You were sold as a pet, but your spirit could not be tamed." She watched him, ready to step out of the present should he become violent. "Your ears were cut to nubs so you could not channel sounds. Your claws were ripped from your hands. Your eyes had been gouged out. You had become so weak from being chained you could hardly move when I found you. They had destroyed you in an effort to control you, and then left. You could not die because you were in so much pain. I knelt down beside you and used pressure points to stop your nerves from firing. You never knew I was there, but you took your last breath in my arms. That is why I am here now. I ended your pain then, and I want to stop it from ever happening how. Should the Circo ever fall, you can not return. No matter what draws you back, you can not do it."
As she spoke the words, she could feel the futures trembling around her. One by one ripples closed, each one ripping away from her, and yet more opened. Her entire body ached as though her bones were slowly being pulled apart and pushed together at the same time, but she did not let it show. At least, she did not let it show much. She knew this pain, she dealt with a dulled version all the time.
It was just that, this time, they were changing because of her.
"Please, believe me. I risked much to come here and tell you. I... I will even try to show you, should that path still be open."

►You have to let it in
You don't bite your tongue off
Carter felt a cold chill cross over him. Everything about this situation just felt so wrong to Carter, he shivered slightly. "My power, it is like what you just experienced. In your mind, you were taken back. I assume it was to your transformation, to when you became like you are now. I saw you ripple as your mind stepped back. My power is like that. I can step back, but I am able to move around and interact if I desire. I must be very careful. Any little thing, a footprint, could change the present." It frightened Carter to know she could see what he had gone through. No one, and he meant no one, should ever have to see those five years. Those men and women were sick, cruel people. The worst part was they probably were still in New York working on projects. They ran the town, they helped feed the poor cities. "It was a flashback. It happens sometimes, nothing to worry about- they trigger sometimes."
|
That was it- that was all. It was just a painful memory. He hoped he could just wave it off for that. His stomach flipped when she said she could change time. It awed him in a way, and he stared at her in a frozen pose, a cat sitting stalk still. He had trouble believing, but he struggled to focus that Circo proved that the world was not normal. "In the future I walked, Circo will fall. For a reason I do not know, you ran back and were captured. You were sold as a pet, but your spirit could not be tamed." Carter did not become violent, violently sick maybe. He felt a wave of nausea flood over him over and over. He was not going to have a panic attack right now, he could feel his claws slide in and out. He wanted to shred something badly, that barrel hay would do nicely. It took everything in him not to shred the hay. Sweat dripped from his orange hair. "Should the Circo ever fall, you can not return. No matter what draws you back, you can not do it." The words were like a poison to the mind. Circo would fall, and gears were snapping in his mind. In his eyes, he saw a world of despair, a world fall. That was all his life was, the one place he belonged to would vanish? It seemed too unreal, and Carter sank to the ground. The tigers tried to comfort him, and Carter spoke something to them. It was in a different language, and sounded much like Latin. The tigers scampered away out of the barn. He waved his arms to make this hurry away. He felt weak in the knees, how could he promise not to come back? Did that mean Circo had another chance, but he couldn't be part of it? "I should never have been born." He sort of moaned to the girl. Funny how much could change in a few minutes- and why was he even believing it all? That. Zero would be having none of that. For some reason, his cry of depression personally offended the small girl. It suddenly didn't matter that the tigers, if they were still near-by, could kill her. It didn't matter that he could kill her. She strode forward, looking nearly as intimidating as Aveira or Yuzki though she did not have height or terrifying looks. And yet she did not strike him. She wanted to pull his hair, make him look her dead in the eye, and yet she didn't do that either. She dropped to her knees in front of him, and like a mother would a child, took him into her arms and brought him close. "Don't you ever say that, believe that, ever again. There were infinite possibilities, paths, where you did not exist. Maybe you weren't born, maybe you were killed, but fate never lead you down that path. You are alive. You are alive, and I am here to make sure you stay that way."
She didn't pull away from him. Even if he clawed her, she wasn't going to pull away. Of course, she didn't exactly have the strength to keep him with her either. "I know why you went back to the Circo, I remember now. The Circo fell because something happened with an oddity. They lost control, the government intervened. No one could stop them. Everyone ran, it was all they could do. Those who were too foolish died. PJ, there is a little girl here who means very much to him because she can truly see him. He ran back to find her, and you followed. You were captured trying to protect him when he didn't need your help. PJ would have been able to find her without you, but you were terrified of losing him."
She sighed softly. "But this is only one future I have seen Carter. Time and space are infinite. Anything and everything can happen. You do not need to live fearing this time will come. For all I know, telling you of it has already destroyed it and it has no possibility of ever happening exactly how I saw it."

You don't bite your tongue off
Carter Walker was busy staring at the floor and not staring at Zero, his face flushing with red. He could feel her moving closer to him, and then kneeling down next to him. At first his entire body froze and tensed, muscles firming, but instead a surprise fell over him. "Don't you ever say that, believe that, ever again. There were infinite possibilities, paths, where you did not exist. Maybe you weren't born, maybe you were killed, but fate never lead you down that path. You are alive. You are alive, and I am here to make sure you stay that way." He wish he could understand better, but he took what he could from her words. he feared being held this close, at first he didn't know why. Was it coming from the fear of not being able to escape? The fear of being too weak? He had lived in fear every day of being too weak. It wasn't an option, he had to stay strong. he found himself raising an arm and patting her arm with his paw gently, the best he could do, sitting in the hay again. He didn't have the willpower to fight, not now. It was too important.
He sat up in her grasp quickly when she started talking of P.J., his best friend. P. J. had been there for Carter since he had first arrived in the circus. He had never left his side, no matter how reckless and idiotic he could be. Even when Carter had gotten angry and threatened him, he never left. This is what made a friend to Carter, that was how he determined trust. If you didn't abandon him, even after you had see his full self, then you earned his respect. " I can't loose P.J. No."
|
He whispered with mourning, he looked up at her and searched her eyes with his own amber ones. " In order for my life to be spared, I must give up his? PJ was an invisible boy. It was true that Zero didn't know exactly how invisible he was, if things like smoke bombs or heat-vision goggles could see him, but if anyone could go in and get the girl out it was him. But of course Carter would not let him do it alone. Did Zero really expect anything less? No, of course not. The boys had been far too close in far too many futures for that. PJ meant a lot to the cat boy. It almost made her wonder if the ghost really knew how much. It was not her place though.
Zero let go of him and moved a little away, meeting his gaze. "I do not believe he would die, Carter. But I can not say for sure until I walk that future again, and doing so could take seconds or years of the present." Time moved so strangely sometimes. Another thing she would never understand, no matter how many paths she walked. "But there is another option." Carter wasn't a family person, at least not yet he wasn't. Asking him to take the young girl, the one who meant so much to PJ, it was almost wrong.
PJ was naturally a father-like figure. He cared for things, and cared for them deeply. Carter? He hardly knew what to do with himself around people his age, much less a child. "Make friends with the girl who means so much to him. I believe he has already met her. That's all you have to do. If you make friends with her, she'll hang around you and PJ more, so maybe he won't have to go back at all." Friends. Carter could handle friends, right? A kind word or two spoken in her direction, maybe watching over her play or even play with her.
And maybe it would be good for him. He never got to have a childhood. Maybe a few of those mental scars would begin to fade with a child's touch.
Zero was quiet for a moment. He was obviously so attached to the invisible boy. Why, then, had she seen those bad futures? Where they thirsted for each other's blood, where they held so much anger. What had happened to cause that? What had taken the loyalty and love, for it was love, and turned it so bitter? She would never know. She could only hope that she hadn't set up the trigger.
For if Carter killed the little girl...
"Do you have anything you wish to ask of me? If I believe it safe to do so, I will tell you."

"Make friends...with a child."
|
Carter gave her a strange look, a strange look indeed. His lip was slightly raised, and his slightly tilted. No matter how immature his thinking just changed, it did. Suddenly this whole situation had just become ridiculous. Carter didn't have any knowledge of little children, they were whiny brats to him. He didn't know how to talk or act around them, and he ended up getting annoyed and the children crying. He had no interest in catering towards a child's needs. Was it jealously? Was he envious that the children had so much attention and caring, when he was young- he had none? Carter fell silent for a moment, thinking. Carter blinked and mumbled a small "fine." Carter did have another question however, one that made him narrow his eyes into slits. "You say that Circo will fall. I refuse to allow this." Carter said his voice was thick full of determination. Well, it might be the one act of selflessness since meeting Zero. "Can you bring people with you? Is there any way I could stop it?" The words gushed out of his mouth, his eyes searching for answers and even hope. Of course. Everyone did this, Zero didn't really know what she expected. Whenever they learned of her powers they wanted to use them. "I can bring people with me, yes." She took a deep breath and slowly stood up. "But while we're walking other paths, seconds or years could pass in your present. And travel takes a toll on your body, and you may not be able to handle it." Well...maybe he could. But she wouldn't wish it on anyone.
"I have seen the Circo fall in a million different ways, but I've also seen it grow and become more than even the Ringmaster dreams. I walk the futures and try to keep the Ringmaster informed of what is to come so he may make the preparations he needs." Of course, there were far more futures of the Circo falling than those of it surviving. But that was the nature of the beast. Kingdoms rose and fell like the ocean's tides and there was nothing she could really do to stop it.
Creation and destruction. Life and death. "But, if you wish, I will walk paths with you. But the future is a hard burden to bear."

►You have to let it in
You don't bite your tongue off
Carter gave a low sigh, his shoulders drooping. Even a bit of light disappeared from his amber eyes. He didn’t really know what he wanted anymore. His brownish-orange ears fell back a bit. He looked down at himself and then up at Zero. This was her life? Walking in between people’s lives and futures? You would have to be hard, cold, and firm to take on so many people’s good and bad fortunes. Why was she so sweet and kind then? She lived a life, almost worse than he or anyone at Circo. She was able to stand strong though, and come to talk to him. He didn’t want to have to burden her with anymore. He was conflicted with his own wants and needs, but what about her. Did someone ever ask her what she wanted? He leaned against the barn wall, crossing his arms, orange hair drifting across his face. ”I understand.”

He murmured softly looking away. ”I don’t want to have to make you do all this.” He said again shyly and looked at the ground. He bit his lip, a habit he had grown into. Thoughts of the past danced around his brain like a T.V. changing channels, and he seemed distance for a few moments. ”It’s not your fault anything, any of this is happening.” [/div] or foam at the lips ►As much as it's upsetting [atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,10,true][atrb=style, width:450px; height:500px; background-color:#f1f1f1; border: 4px solid #2f2f2f, bTable] ►TAGS Nuri ►NOTES Feeeellllsss ►WORDS template by AERON of BTN! Now he was all... Could she call it sad? No, it wasn't sadness. Not really. It was some unholy child of sadness and confusion, and she had caused it. That was just wonderful, just great. But he wasn't asking her to take him into the future anymore, that was good. She had never actually walked with anyone before, not anyone from Circo at least. The very idea was just asking for problems. Everyone here was so different, so unique, they played roles in things she would never guess. If she had walked with him, and it had taken years from the present, what exactly would she cause?
Besides, then PJ would be alone. "I know I didn't cause any of this, Carter. I live my life so that I never cause anything." Wallflower to the extreme. "In fact, I normally never speak to anyone, not unless my job demands it." He was the first person she had actually reached out to talk to. And why? Because he died in such a dramatic way? Certainly everyone who called Circo home had a future like that hanging over them. Carter really wasn't that special.
Even his gift wasn't anything special, when one compared it to gifts like Zero's.
So why had she cared? Why had she put him out of his misery, and then come back to warn him of it? Like it had even done any good. If PJ went back, Carter was still going to follow him. The future she saw might still happen. So she had put the fate of the world at stake for absolutely nothing.
That was such a heartwarming thought.
"You're not making me do anything. If I wished I could step out of your present and basically disappear." Even the Ringmaster couldn't /make/ her do anything. "If you wish to see a future where Circo falls, I will take you. But there is very little you will be able to do. The people there will not recognize you, only the things you do." The little things, like how people swore something took the wheel and that's why they didn't crash, those were all because of people like Zero. People who walk through time and decided to stop and help. "The only people who ever see me are those close to death. They're so close to leaving their realm that, for a moment, they can see through it." The light, the voices of those who have gone before them, things like that.
