“I never knew that!” gasped Artie, “I'll have to keep my wish a secret.” As much as Artie wanted to tell Lilly his wish, he knew that he'd need to keep it to himself. He didn't anticipate that keeping secrets would be so hard! The poor chimera bit his tongue and whimpered, trying to keep the wish to himself. But he just couldn't. He couldn't keep such an amazing, fantastic, genius wish away from a girl like Lilly. “I'll whisper it in your ear so the fireflies don't hear. That way, it'll still come true! Nobody will know I told, well, except for you,” he said.
Artie scooted closer to Lilly, cupped a gentle hand around her ear, and whispered: “I wish that teddy-bears could hug people back,” he whispered, “And that everybody had one, just in case they don't have a Lilly to hug.” Pleased with his wish, Artie shook himself so the fireflies would scatter. Then, he flopped back so he could look at the stars. “I want to lie here with you,” said Artie, “Besides, I don't need to chase them if they're chasing me. Besides, we've got plenty in the jar for...yaaaawn...when ya wanna make your wish.” Artie's voice got fainter as a peaceful sleepiness consumed him, causing his eyelids to droop.
“Hey Lilly,” he mumbled, “Are ya gonna make your wish yet? I'm sure if you...hn...I'm sure if you whisper it, it'll still come true.”

Clearly he didn't understand the workings of magic. But could she blame him? He barely knew the workings of the mundane world. To ask him to understand somethingas wonderful and complex as magic was asking the impossible. Of course, all of that was assuming that magic was real. And it wasn't. It really wasn't. She planted that thought firmly in her head as she snuggled close, whispering her wish to him as he had done to her.
Because otherwise she doubted he would leave her alone about it.
"I wish that you'll be happy." That was the simplified version. And with that she opened the jar once more, allowing the fireflies to escape should they wish it. Poor guys. All they had wanted was to find someone to be happy with that night, and she and Artie had put them in a jar. It wasn't likely they'd be granting any wishes.
Lilly laid back after a moment, looking out into the stars. Even if magic wasn't real, the mundane world still was beautiful. There were things like the stars. Cold and forever there, casting light out into the darkness. And the trees that were thousands of years old, and the ocean... and people like Artie. He could have wished for anything in the world and he wished for the world. Sure, a teddy bear couldn't really do anything. They couldn't heal sickness, they couldn't feed the starving, but... In a childish way, maybe the bear was best. It could bring comfort where other things could not.
She'd used her wish on others too, but on Artie. And even that was selfish. She wanted him happy so that he would never leave her, if she looked deep down inside. She closed her eyes, blocking out the light of the stars. "I love you."

“Y-y-you did? Well, gosh! I wanna change my wish now,” yawned Artie, “I wish I'd thought of something like that! I could've wished for you to...yaaaawn...be happy too.” Artie stretched comfortably, although the back of his mind regretted not having come up with a more serious wish. “I wished for the first thing that popped into my head,” he explained. While his wish wasn't for world peace or a miracle cure for a common cold, it was a glimpse of how Artie saw the world. Through his eyes, life was quite the beautiful place.
If you gave Artie the dictionary, he'd read it and be able to spit back every definition word for word. If you left him alone with an algebra textbook, he could score in the highest percentile on a test given to children with a proper education. The problem wasn't his ability to comprehend, but rather, to apply what he learned to life. While he may have been a genius on written exams where his only goal was to regurgitate information perfectly, the complexities of society had him stumbling like a toddler. Why did he need to chew with his mouth closed? Why did people kiss instead of lick? Why did people get angry when he hugged strangers? Those questions couldn't be solved like an equation; there was no definite answer most of the time, other than it was just the way of “humans”.
“Hey, Lilly? I think your wish came true,” he murmured, “I don't think I've ever been this happy before.” For as long as Artie could remember – which wasn't too long, due to his blocked memories – he'd never felt as content as he'd been at that moment. He pressed his forehead against Lilly's and closed his eyes. “I love you too.”

All she had to do was open her eyes. One simple movement, one she had been doing all her life, and she'd be looking right into his. Why was it so hard then? She wasn't afraid of what she'd see. In a single day she knew she'd won over his heart. A few words and actions of kindness and she's earned her place in his life. And maybe...maybe that was it. How easily he came to trust her, to love her. Now that she was thinking about it, she'd never been certain of anyone's feelings ever. Not until Artie. And that was what scared her. He was so certain of her. She had a feeling that she could tell him anything, anything at all, and he wouldn't go away. Or, at least, he wouldn't go away for long. Kinda like when he had vanished under the bed. A few kind words and he'd come back.
Such devotion and Lilly didn't know what to do with it. She was used to giving herself to others and them just throwing it back in her face. Artie? He had given his heart in trade for hers. And it wasn't a fair trade, it really wasn't. Her heart was a fixer-upper while his was perfect. A little wild, a little silly, in need of some kind of calming tea or something, but perfect.
She opened her eyes and gave the pup a small smile. "You're tired." She shifted a little, holding her arms open for him. They would sleep out there, under the moon and stars, cuddled up the like the puppy and child they were. "Let's go to sleep. Maybe when we wake up, your wish will have come true too."

“I'm not tired at all,” yawned Artie, “I can still play...” Denying his own sleepiness didn't get Artie far; he still yawned and strained his eyes by focusing on Lilly. There was a stuffiness in his head, a combination of a sugar-induced headache and the consequences of staying up until the early hours of the morning, that made it hard to concentrate. All in all, Artie was fighting a loosing battle. “We can still chase more fireflies. I've got plenty of energy left, he said.
Artie picked himself up, ready to go chase more fireflies and prove that he wasn't even the slightest bit sleepy. Still...Lilly's arms looked so warm, so inviting. Without really meaning to, he migrated into the comfort of her arms. He wrapped his own arms around Lilly, returning the favor so they could be cradling each other. “But I guess a nap won't hurt.”
He stole a kiss from the tip of Lilly's nose, smiled happily, and closed his eyes. Artie pressed his cheek against Lilly's neck, right below her ears. It was his favorite spot to be on a person, right under the ears. That spot never ceased to have the perfect combination of that particular person's signature scent and whatever shampoo they'd used in the shower.
“Won't hurt...” he mumbled.
