“That sounds like a challenge,” he said, laughing into the teddy-bear. All oddities had witnessed the ridiculous amount of food the shape-shifter could pack away at dinner; one snarky performer even suggested that the kid had a tape worm. If left to his own devices, he could probably gobble up half of the buffet line in an hour. Not to mention, the pigeon population had declined ever since Artie was allowed to hunt birds on the rooftops. The Ringmaster rather have him eating pigeons than the exotic birds saved for shows, though sometimes a few parakeets went “missing” and Artie would cough up a feathers at meal times.
“I can help?” he asked, “You'll really let me help? I asked the cook that once, but he hit my hands with a spoon when I tried to eat the dough.” Artie pursed his lips at the thought. People were so finicky about rules! With all the don't eat that, don't touch that, don't do that, and for the love of glob, don't say that, what was he supposed to do?
“It's alright if you don't know any games,” said Artie, nodding enthusiastically, “I honestly make up the rules as a go along, since I didn't have anybody teach me either. The rules I come up with are probably better than the originals. So...You'll like them, I promise!” There was a part of Artie that when he looked into Aveira's eyes, sought attention and praise like a forgotten pet that had been kicked around one too many times. “The only game I really know is hide-and-seek, but that's because there were some pretty good descriptions in a book I read. You...you won't mind, would you? If the games aren't the real-McCoy for your first time?”
Ever so cheerfully, he reached for her hand.

Would she really let him help? It kinda sounded like she was signing away her soul or something. Chef had clearly had bad experiences, he had been one of the people to send in complaints, but this was different. "Chef had to, Artie. He's cooking food for all of Circo. If everyone who helped him always ate while they were cooking he'd never have enough food for everyone." Hopefully he would understand that, right? Though he did seem a little selfish sometimes, she didn't believe it was on purpose. He truly did have the mind of a child. What exactly would it take for it to age? Hopefully time would be enough.
She was going to respond to his question of games, but the almost touch took priority. She jerked her hand away as if he was a snake, both disappearing behind her back in a proper guard's stance. "I'd love to play Artie, but we will have to play a game where you don't have to touch me."A gentle reminder. She didn't want to upset him, but he had to remember that part of her was dangerous. As friendly as she was, her danger would never go away. She couldn't control her power and she honestly didn't care. True, she had tried for awhile to control it, but had made no progress. What being on any world would continue to work at something if they never got anything out of it?
She could hold off the flood of memories for a few minutes, but nothing more. They were just as mind-destroying. It took just as long for her to recover from them when they end. But, honestly, Artie probably wouldn't be so bad. Just a string of childish memories and feelings. The problem was that he probably got said feelings often. It wouldn't be like Yuzki, who was careful not to set her off again. Artie's skin would always be a danger.
"Even if you're careful to just touch my clothes. My power really hurts me, and I don't want you to accidentally set it off." Besides, it would probably scare the hell out of the poor boy.

Even if it was only a small explanation, he felt the heat of being corrected. “I wasn't going to eat it all,” he said, “Only a little bit, to see if I was doing a good job. I might take a few extra bites if it was really good, but I wasn't gonna eat everything.” He closed his defense with a pout, like a stubborn schoolboy who wasn't getting his way, and found himself being scolded for something else. Although this time, he shrank back instead of getting defensive. From afar, it almost looked like he'd recoiled from an invisible slap. If there was one thing Artie never wanted to do, it was hurt any living thing without the intention of eating it. He cried if he accidentally stepped on bugs...one could only imagine how he'd react to setting off Aveira's power.
A raw, apologetic look crossed his face when he looked up at the security woman. “I didn't mean to,” he said quickly, “I didn't think...I got too excited because we were going to play...I'm sorry.” Artie's misguided rules of judgment deemed almost touching Aviera on the close-to-whimpering-on-the-ground level of an apology, but decided that having half of the circus go hungry because he wanted a quick snack not worth noting.
“You aren't mad, are you?” he asked slowly, uncertainly, “Do you still want to play with me? I'll even let you pick the game we play, lady! Or if games are too dangerous, you can decide what we do instead...since I can't really think of a game where we won't have to touch.”
